Dhaka: A fire broke out at the residence of Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Selim in Dhaka’s Banani around 1:30 AM on Friday. Due to security challenges and the absence of adequate police protection, the Fire Service was delayed and only managed to reach the location at 2:45 AM.
According to the Fire Service control room duty officer, a disorderly crowd was responsible for setting the fire. The chaotic situation prevented fire service vehicles from accessing the site promptly.
This incident follows a series of attacks on properties linked to ruling party leaders. On Wednesday night, protesters vandalized and set fire to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhanmondi-32, using a bulldozer to demolish much of the structure. Similar arson and destruction were reported at the homes and offices of Awami League leaders in various parts of the country.
In response, the interim government issued a stern warning in a late-night statement on Thursday. It declared that any attempts to create unrest through vandalism and arson would be met with strict law enforcement measures. The authorities assured the public that they were committed to safeguarding lives and property and vowed to take legal action against those responsible for the attacks.
